Impersonation:
Due to the vast number of users in Norwich and the number of emails used, Norwich ITS needs to have Impersonation filters in place. These filters analyze incoming mail to see if the sender (who the email is from) looks like a user in the Norwich System. For example, look at the email below from "Ed Hockenbury."
Auto Forwarding:
Norwich University's Acceptable Use Policy strictly prohibits the automatic forwarding of emails to external domains; this includes setting a forwarding address in Outlook/OWA or setting a rule to forward emails to external domains. This Policy is implemented to maintain the security, confidentiality, and integrity of the University's communication network.
Rationale Behind the Policy:
- Data Security and Privacy: Forwarding emails externally could expose sensitive information to unauthorized individuals, risking data breaches and privacy violations.
- Compliance with Regulations: Compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), mandates strict control over the handling and transmitting of sensitive data.
- Confidentiality of Communications: To ensure that communications within the University are kept confidential and within a controlled environment.
Consequences of Auto Forwarding:
Emails that are auto-forwarded outside of the Norwich.edu domain and subsequent subdomains may be discarded into a 'black hole' and rendered irretrievable.
