Windows Licensing Errors
29-MAR-2022
Norwich Windows workstations check-in with the domain on a semi-regular basis to verify licensing information. When a Norwich machine is off-campus long enough without connecting by VPN, the operating system cannot verify the Windows license key. When your computer cannot confirm the license key, you may receive an error that the license key is out of date and the license needs to be updated. The steps below will resolve the issue while off-campus.
- Connect to campus by launching Anyconnect, and starting the VPN.
- After you have confirmed that the VPN has connected, we will need an elevated Command Prompt.
- Click on the start menu at the bottom left. Start typing CMD.
- When Command Prompt appears in the search window, right-click on it and select “Run as Administrator”.
- When the command prompt window appears, please type the following three commands. Please hit enter after you input each of them.
- slmgr -ckhc (enter)
- slmgr -ckms (enter)
- slmgr -ato (enter)
These steps should force your machine to check-in with Active Directory, and check the validity of the license key in use.
