Apple ID Federation
18-DEC-2023
On December 18th, 2023, Norwich ITS is reclaiming the usernames for any personal Apple ID accounts associated with a Norwich email address. If, at any time in the past, you used your Norwich email address (@norwich.edu or @stu.norwich.edu)mailto:user@norwich.edu to create an Apple ID, you will soon need to change the email address on that account.
What does this mean for you?
- Apple will identify any users whose personal Apple ID contains @norwich.edu or @stu.norwich.edu.
- Those users will receive an email and a notification on their Apple devices telling them to rename their personal Apple ID.
- To change the email address set as your Apple ID username, follow this support article from Apple. If you have trouble changing the email, you must contact Apple for support, as we have no control over your personal Apple ID accounts.
- If users delay renaming their personal Apple ID, they will keep receiving notifications and emails, with one final email at 60 days.
- After 60 days, the user’s personal Apple ID is automatically renamed to a temporary username, and the original username is released and reclaimed by Norwich.
- Once you have completed the change, you must sign out of your Apple ID on EVERY Apple device the account is currently signed into.
- You can follow Apple’s support article on how to sign out of your account on any device. If you have trouble, you must contact Apple for support, as we have no control over your personal Apple ID accounts.
- Once you are signed out, sign in with the new email address you have selected for your Apple ID.
- You will not lose any contacts, music, photos, or applications purchased or downloaded under the Apple ID.
- The change will not appear complete until ALL devices you have linked to the Norwich email address have signed out of and then signed back into with the new email address.
There are inherent security and fraud risks with accounts that may seem associated with Norwich University but are not under our control. We are taking these steps to mitigate those risks and bring any Apple ID usernames associated with Norwich under our control. Outside of mitigating those risks, we may take advantage of other benefits of this process in the future.
