Secure Data Drive Usage Guide

Summary

A quick guide on how to set up and use a Secure Data Drive.

Body

In today's digital age, safeguarding your data is paramount. Encrypted drives protect sensitive information from unauthorized access and cyber threats. Encrypted drives ensure that your data remains safe and inaccessible even if your device falls into the wrong hands by converting data into a secure format that can only be unlocked with a specific key or password. Norwich has begun working with SecureData, whose drives are approved for removable media on Norwich-issued Devices.

Once issued a drive, you should also receive a password. Remember this password as it is unique to you; ITS also has this password if you forget it. In addition, please download the Secure Data Managed APP. There are many secure data apps, so make sure it is the MANGED app. Below are the website links for the apps, but these should be installed on your mobile device through the Apple App Store or Android Google Play Store.

Apple: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/securedata-lock-managed/id1469385899

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.securedatalock_plus

Once the app is installed, plug your drive into your computer (either via USB-C or USB-A. Both cables are included with the drive)

Once plugged in, you should see a Red Lock at the top of the drive, which means the drive is locked and encrypted.

To unlock the drive, open the SD Managed app you installed. Make sure your device's Bluetooth is turned on as well as Location Services for the Secure Data Managed App. Log into the app with the username and password you set up via an activation email that would have been sent to your Norwich email address.

After a minute or two, you should see a named device appear in the app with it locked. Tap the serial number or red lock in the app to unlock.  You will be prompted for the password you set up with ITS.  A green lock in the app will now show a successful unlock.

Once in the drive, you MUST change the password to something only you know.  This can be done by simply tapping Change Password once the drive is unlocked.

Here, you can also enable FaceID, Inactivity Lockout, for when the drive has not been active for x amount of time and locks itself, or step-away lockout, where if you walk away from your drive with your phone, it will lock itself. Here, you can also set it to read-only.

Use the drive as you need to lock it. You can either use the app by swiping to the left and then clicking the red lock icon that appears, or you can eject and remove the drive.

Below is the guide from Secure Data. If there are questions outside of what is covered above, please refer to this document or contact Norwich ITS.

Important Note:

If the drive keeps disconnecting after a minute or minute and a half connected, this is a power issue with the operating system. Here is Secure Data's guidance on this problem:
