Adding a Printer to a Norwich Mac
06-JAN-2022
Most printers on the Norwich Campus can be added to your Mac using Bonjour. Some of the limitations to adding printers by Bonjour though include the inability to select special functions such as double-sided printing. You can add any printer on Campus, if you know its name, user the following steps. For this tutorial I am adding the MFP device common to all buildings. These instructions are accurate for devices up to Mac OSX Catalina.
1. Click in the Apple in the upper left of your screen and select System Preferences.
2. In System Preferences select the Printers and Scanners option.
3. Click the plus at the lower left to add a Printer.
4. Right click (control-click) in the menu bar area of the Add Printer window,
and select Customize Toolbar..
5. Drag the Advanced Gear into the Toolbar above. Place it in the box that opened for editing.
6. Click advanced and wait. It will initially attempt to add an Epsom platform device. Click on the drop down to the right of Type and select "LDP/LPR Host or Printer."
7. All Norwich printers are on a Print server. The base address for the print server is a Windows share. All addresses will start with lpd://printserver.norwich.edu/. After the slash you will enter the name of the printer. The naming convention for the MFP devices usually follows (building)_MFP_(room). For example, the MFP devices for Math and Science are located in Cabot. The rooms in which they are located is 190, and 290. The addresses then would be for the unit on the first floor lpd://printserver.norwich.edu/cabot_MFP_190.
8. The Name field is the name by which the printer will appear in your printer list. You can enter any short name, or nickname for the device. Location is not important, and is a field you can populate is you want.
9. To select the correct driver for the MFP devices start by clicking on the drop-down labeled Use:
In the information that appears please use "Select Software..."
You can use the search Window in the upper right to narrow down the items. The Konica devices on campus are C458n. If you type the model number, 458, you will get this result.
Highlight the remaining driver and click OK.
10. As it prepares the driver package. Please leave the default settings.
11. After click OK on the driver page you have successfully added the printer. You may want to set the printer as you default. Right click on the printer in your list. In the contextual menu you will be presented with the option to set the device as default.
