How to Update Machine Password (Windows)

06-APR-2020

Many functions of Windows based machines are tied to the Users domain password.  In many cases a user may have to update their computer when it is not covenient to come to campus.  When this situation occurs you may find that connectivity to applications, and services may be degraded.  How do you then sync a new password to a computer when the unit is not on campus is an important thing to ask.

To update the locally cached password on your Norwich provided Windows laptop please follow the steps below.

  1. Confirm that you know your current Norwich password.  To do this please navigate in the browser of your choice to the Office365 SSO web page, http://sso.norwich.edu.  When you arrive there you will want to complete authentication.

  1. After confirming that you know your password by successfully completing authentication to Office365 launch the Cisco Anyconnect application.

  1. Use Anyconnect, and your current password to connect to the VPN.  If the VPN address line is vacant in Anyconnect the address is vpn.norwich.edu
  2. After connecting to the VPN you will need to lock the screen of your computer.  This can be accmplished by using the combination of Windows key and "L", or "Ctrl" "Alt" and "Del" keys, and selecting lock screen.  While your desktop is locked the VPN connection is still valid, and your computer is communicating with Norwich resources.
  3. Unlock your computer. The on screen instuctions will ask you if you want to unlock the screen.  Usually the "Ctrl" "Alt" and "Del" combination will provide you again with the login box requesting you enter your password.  You will now enter the password you used for Sailpoint, in step one, or the VPN in step 2.  Since your computer is connected to the University by the VPN still it can reach the authenticaiton server to query what your password is, and then update the local cache for all services (printing, logon, Outlook, etc.)
