Dorm room ethernet connections

Each student room has at least one port lit for every student scheduled to reside in that room for the year (eg. A 3-person room would have at least 3 ports pre-lit). There are two wall plates in each room, except for Crawford and Alumni, which have 3-5 wall plates in each room. One port per wall plate will be active for a room that has at least 2 students, except for Alumni and Crawford.

Corps: Each room has a Cisco Access Point (AP) plugged into a pre-lit port. As of August 2023 the upgraded Access Points function in the following manner;

  1. The two ports furthest to the right on the AP will provide network services to devices that cannot complete authentication.  This would include Smart Media devices and gaming consoles.
  2. The second port from the left will be the port needed to connect a personal computer.  Please use the following articles to configure 802.1X authentication for Windows 10, or Windows 11 machines.

GAMING DEVICES

Before plugging your device in, please make sure that your device does not have a custom name assigned to it (e.g. “ITUSS_xBoxOne”), and has the default name (e.g. “Xbox” or “Xbox-One”).

If you have plugged your gaming device into an active port and it does not immediately work, this is normal. Please leave your device plugged in and inactive for ~24 hours; this will allow the device to profile and be identified as a gaming device.

AUTHENTICATING:

If your laptop/desktop is plugged into a port and it is not connecting, please read the knowledge base article to set up 802.1x authentication for Windows 10 or 802.1X authentication for Windows 11.

If you have followed the above instructions and your device still cannot connect, please request service or email the IT Help Desk at helpdesk@norwich.edu with the following information:

  • Dorm
  • Room Number
  • MAC Address of your device
  • Port Number being used (A-20, F-41, etc..)

**NOTE: IF YOU CHANGE ROOMS/PORTS, YOU MAY NEED TO GO THROUGH THIS PROCESS AGAIN**
